Absence Reporting

🏥 Illness and Absence Reporting

We understand that children may occasionally be too unwell to attend school. However, regular attendance is vital for learning, wellbeing, and progress.

📞 Reporting Absence

It is the responsibility of parents/carers to inform the school of any absence by 8:15am on each day their child is absent.

You can report an absence by:

  • ☎️ Leaving a message on our Attendance Answerphone: 01902 556486

  • 📱 Using the Arbor App

  • 📧 Emailing: office@bushburylaneacademy.co.uk

  • 📞 Calling the School Office: 01902 556486

🚪 If we do not hear from you for two consecutive days, a home visit will be carried out by school staff to ensure your child’s safety and wellbeing.

🤒 Illness Guidance

We know that deciding whether your child is well enough for school can be difficult. If your child has a mild cold, sore throat, or cough, they may still be well enough to attend school with appropriate care and medication. Please use your best judgment and consult your GP or pharmacist if unsure.

🕒 For confirmed cases of sickness and diarrhoea, we advise keeping your child at home for 48 hours after the last episode to prevent the spread of infection.

💬 We will always contact you if we feel your child is unwell during the school day and needs to go home.

📊 Medical Evidence and Attendance Monitoring

If your child’s attendance falls below 96.99%, we may request medical evidence to authorise further absences. This could include:

  • 📅 Appointment cards

  • 🏥 Hospital letters

  • 💊 Prescriptions

  • 📸 Screenshots of NHS app bookings

🧑‍⚕️ Please speak to the Attendance Team if you’re unsure what qualifies as medical evidence—we’re here to help.

🧡 How Can You Help Support Your Child’s Attendance?

Supporting your child’s attendance helps them thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. Here are some simple ways you can help:

  • 🕗 Ensure daily attendance and punctuality
Make sure your child attends school every day and arrives on time.

  • 🧠 Talk about the importance of school
Help your child understand why attending school regularly matters.

  • 🌙 Establish a healthy bedtime routine
A good night’s sleep and a calm morning routine help your child feel ready for the day.

  • 🦷 Book medical/dental appointments outside school hours
If this isn’t possible, please ensure your child attends school before and returns after the appointment.
⏰ A school day is split into two sessions—we will only authorise one session for medical appointments.

  • ✈️ Take holidays during school breaks
Avoid term-time holidays to prevent disruption to your child’s learning.

  • 💬 Talk positively about school
Ask about their day, celebrate their successes, and show interest in what they’re learning.

  • 🏫 Attend school events and parents’ evenings
Your involvement shows your child that school is important.

  • 🎉 Praise and reward effort and achievement
    Celebrate progress, not just perfection!

  • 🤝 Work with school staff
We’re here to support your child. Let’s work together to manage any challenges.

  • 📣 Speak to us early if problems arise
Whether it’s emotional, behavioural, or practical—we’re here to help.

🌟 Our Goal

We want your child to be:

  • ✅ Safe

  • 😊 Happy

  • 💪 Healthy

  • 🎓 Inspired to achieve a great future
